TeGo asked:

I have an 11 month old who is deffinitely ready to learn to walk but I don’t really let her just roam or anything because I have all tile floor. I don’t have any rugs in the house because I have 2 dogs and they just shed too much. Any suggestions on how I can let her get the exercise she needs in order to learn to walk without her getting hurt? She loves to walk the perimeter of her play pen holding on to the side and will walk on floor when I hold her hands. Is this enough practice or does she have to walk holding on to furniture and walls to learn?

Im a mom too, and I would be so nervous in your shoes. I would invest in a few rugs for “walking time” that or a helmet……..

Let her walk shes gonna get bumps and scrapes that is just normal. She will never learn if you dont let her.

She needs the freedom to roam. I would get some area rugs and just commit to vacuuming daily.

    get her a walker/push toy
the more she can practice the faster she will learn
take her outside in the grass (it’s a lot harder balance wise but at least if she falls…)

it could be enough and it could not be…try letting her hold your hand when she wants to walk so you can catch her if she loses balance…after she barley ever loses balance you can try to let her walk on her own

She will be fine on a tile floor. I have tile and hardwood with one small rug and no problems. They will bump a little but my 9 month niece has been learning how to walk on wood and tile and is fine, they know how to ease themselves onto the floor is necessary.

I have all hardwood/tile in my home as well. My son started
walk about 6 weeks ago. I just let him cruise holding on to things like furniture and push toys to help him build muscles and confidence. One day he just stood up and announced “I go” and he was off, walking. I wouldn’t worry about no rugs, just make sure there are no sharp edges on tables or anything and if there are get some rubber corner bumpers to pad them. Let her cruise around holding on things and she’ll soon just start on her own without help one day. Little ones, even after they learn to walk, still stumble and trip over occassionally but’s it part of learning- just like riding a bike later on.

well i would say to get a long exerciting mat that would not harm your 11 th month old baby. and let the baby start walking on that.

Learning to walk involves falling down and getting bumps and maybe a few bruises. If these are the floors that are in your house, you’d do better to let her get used to walking on them.

u have to let her learn to walk soon because then she will not be able to develop her leg muscles or so ive heard
    anyways..
you should think about buying this to put on top or ur floor
they are giant foam puzzles tht are really cushiony :&tbnh=96&tbnw=96&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgiant%2Bfoam%2Bpuzzles%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26ie%3DUTF-8

I think thin rugs would make it worse- they move around and the baby could trip on them. If you have her in bare feet or socks with the grips on the bottom, she’ll be fine. Just watch her carefully. Babies fall! Their bones still have alot of cartilage in them- they’re not solid bone. Ask any parent of a walking toddler- they have bruises and bumps all the time. Just use common sense.

    hi

my baby is 12.5 months now
at on point he really liked walking on a yoga mat, it has a soft, none skid surface and very colorful.
having rugs could be dangerous too if they small and move around, child could fall easily
i take my baby to playground outside and walk him while he holds to my hand or finger, mostly he lets go.
walking along the perimeter of the home is fine for now too.
you can always ask pediatric md

Let her walk on the tile…. My house is all tile except for the bedrooms. My daughter has done just fine! She is approaching 2 yrs old and no accidents. She needs to be out of the play pen to learn to explore her environment.

I have tile floors also and when my daughter was learning to walk, I was very nervous also. I have a big area rug in our living room, and her bedroom has carpet, so I tried to stick to those places until she was better on her feet. But we can’t keep them from being mobil once they are, so bumps and bruises might happen, everything will be ok. Area rugs can be slippery and also, it’s difficult for the child to go from walking on carpet to tile back and forth. Check out her toes when she’s walking, they grasp the fibers of the carpet more while on carpet because it’s more unstable than the tile, and making the transition from walking from carpet to tile isn’t a natural thing she does already, she has keep doing it, and then she will just do it without thinking about it. But for now, every step is carefully thought out by your 11th month old and stepping from carpet, to tile then back to carpet constantly could be difficult for her. The socks with the rubber grips are very helpful too.

I would go and buy some foam mats like the ones that are for exercising or for kids playrooms and put those down around the perimeter of the couch and things she can hold on to. eventually move them farther away from the furniture and she will learn to walk on her own.

Buy her a pair of Robies(not sure of spelling), they are soft leather sole socks/shoes that won’t slip but let her get comfortable using feet without the constriction of a hard soled shoe. My girls had many a pair. They should also build their own confidence by walking on their own. Tape blankets around any hard edged furniture. We bought foam pipe wrap (at hardware store) and wrapped those aroung legs of coffee tables and stuff. Practice makes perfect, but still keep an eye out, especially with the dogs around…
